At 3:30 AM there are exactly two places to buy food at LAX: Urth Caffe & Bar in Terminal 1, and the pre-security Starbucks at Terminal 2 arrivals. Half an hour later, seven more open. By 5 AM most of the airport is awake.

That half-hour gap matters more than it sounds like it should, because the LAX checkpoint data says the security line is already moving well before the coffee is. Two AM reads 0 minutes every single day of the week. By 3 AM it’s 9 to 17 minutes depending on the day. The building fills up first and feeds you second.

What opens before 5 AM?

Working from the hours listed in the LAX restaurant directory:

Time Where
24 hrs Starbucks (Tom Bradley), Pret A Manger (Tom Bradley), Fat Sal’s (T3, 12:01 AM–11:59 PM)
3:30 AM Urth Caffe & Bar (T1), Starbucks (T2 arrivals, pre-security)
4:00 AM Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (T1, T7, T8), California Pizza Kitchen to-go (T1), The Kitchen by Wolfgang Puck (T6), Point the Way Café (T6), Carl’s Jr (T8), Starbucks Evenings (T6 and Tom Bradley)
4:30 AM Native by Nyesha (T3), Rock & Brews coffee and grab-and-go (T1), Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (Tom Bradley, pre-security)

The standout on that list is Native by Nyesha at Gate 33A, which opens at 4:30 AM. It’s a chef-driven restaurant from a Los Angeles cook, and it’s serving before dawn — a genuinely unusual combination at any U.S. airport. If you’re on a 6 AM transcon out of Terminal 3, that’s a better breakfast than the hour deserves.

The Kitchen by Wolfgang Puck in Terminal 6 is the other one worth walking to at 4 AM. Point the Way Café is a few steps away in the same terminal and opens at the same hour, so T6 is the best-covered terminal at that time of night.

Terminal 8 is thin but functional: Carl’s Jr and a Coffee Bean, both at 4 AM. Terminal 4 has nothing before 5, when Sammy’s Woodfired starts its to-go service.

What’s still open after midnight?

The late list is shorter and clusters differently — Tom Bradley and Terminal 2, mostly.

  • Vino Volo (Tom Bradley) — 1:30 AM, or after the last flight boards. The latest listed closing time at LAX.
  • SeaLegs Wine Bar (T2) — 12:30 AM, same “or after the last flight boards” caveat.
  • Starbucks (T2) — 12:30 AM.
  • Barney’s Beanery (T2) — midnight.
  • Umami Burger (Tom Bradley) — midnight.
  • Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza & Grill (T4) — midnight, to-go and dining room both.
  • Burger King (Tom Bradley West Gates) — midnight.
  • Fat Sal’s (T3) — 11:59 PM, and back open a minute later.
  • Ink.sack (Tom Bradley) — 11:30 PM.

Rock & Brews in Terminal 5 used to be on this list. Terminal 5 closed on 28 October 2025 and was demolished, so it is not.

If you’re on a red-eye east and you want a drink before you board, SeaLegs in Terminal 2 and Vino Volo in Tom Bradley are the two answers, and they’re the only two answers past midnight.

Why the late window is busier than it looks

The thing people get wrong about late nights at LAX is assuming the airport is empty because it’s dark. It isn’t. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday all peak at 10 PM in the wait-time data — 23, 22, 22 and 19 minutes respectively. That’s higher than any morning hour on three of those four days.

LAX has exactly 17 hours in the week that read 5 minutes or less, and 14 of them are the 1 AM and 2 AM hours. That’s the entire quiet window: sixty to a hundred and twenty minutes a day, in the middle of the night.

So the practical order of operations for a midnight departure is the reverse of what you’d guess. Clear security at 10 PM and you’re in the day’s worst line. Clear at 11:30 and you’re in a 10-to-12-minute line with Vino Volo still serving.

Where this list comes from, and where it stops

Hours are listed for 61 of the 97 LAX restaurants in the FlyIndex directory. The other 36 don’t carry an hours field, which means they’re not on the table above — not that they’re closed. A few of them almost certainly open early. We’d rather leave them off than guess at a time you’d plan around.

The same caveat applies in the other direction: several listings say “or after the last flight boards in the terminal,” which is a real operating rule at LAX and not a formality. On a night with a delayed 11:40 PM departure, SeaLegs stays open. On a night without one, it may not make it to 12:30.

The short version by terminal

  • Terminal 1 — best early coverage outside Tom Bradley. Urth Caffe at 3:30, three more by 4:30.
  • Terminal 2 — the only pre-security option worth knowing about (Starbucks, 3:30 AM), and the best post-midnight sit-down.
  • Terminal 3 — Fat Sal’s around the clock, Native by Nyesha from 4:30.
  • Terminal 4 — nothing before 5 AM. Sammy’s carries the midnight end. (Terminal 5’s Rock & Brews used to as well; the terminal closed in October 2025.)
  • Terminal 6 — two openings at 4 AM, the strongest 4 AM terminal at LAX.
  • Terminals 7 and 8 — Coffee Bean at 4 AM in both, Carl’s Jr in T8.
  • Tom Bradley — Starbucks and Pret never close. Vino Volo is the last call.

If you’re connecting between terminals to reach any of this, the walk is the constraint, not the hours — the terminal-to-terminal guide has the airside routes. And if you just want the best cup rather than the earliest one, we ranked LAX coffee separately.

Vino Volo in Tom Bradley until 1:30 AM, SeaLegs Wine Bar and a Starbucks in Terminal 2 until 12:30 AM, and Barney's Beanery, Umami Burger and Sammy's in Terminal 4 until midnight. Terminal 5 is closed, so its Rock & Brews is no longer an option.
