LAX Terminal 8 Has Four Restaurants. Walk to 7.

Four restaurants. Two shops. That’s the whole concession list for Terminal 8 in FlyIndex’s LAX restaurant data, and it makes T8 the leanest of the airport’s nine terminals by a wide margin. Terminal 7, sharing a wall with it, has ten restaurants and six shops.

The two are connected airside. That fact is worth more than any restaurant recommendation I can give you.

What’s actually in Terminal 8

Let’s be fair to the place before we leave it.

Engine Company No. 28 is the one real restaurant — classic American with a Southern lean and a full bar, open 5 AM to 11:30 PM. It’s the LA original’s airport outpost, and it is a genuinely reasonable place to eat a plate of food while sitting in a chair. If you have an hour in T8 and no appetite for walking, this is your answer and it’s not a consolation prize.

Carl’s Jr opens at 4 AM and runs to 11 PM, which makes it the earliest hot food on this side of the horseshoe. Panda Express is Panda Express. The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf kiosk opens at 4 AM but closes at 8 PM, and that closing time catches people out on delayed evening departures.

For shopping, you get People News and E! Entertainment — a newsstand and a gift shop, essentially. E! stays open until midnight, which makes it the last place in T8 to buy a bottle of water.

That’s it. That’s the terminal.

The walk to Terminal 7 is the move

LAX splits into two airside groups: Terminals 4 through 8 plus Terminal B on one side, Terminals 1 through 3 on the other. Inside the 4-8 group you can walk freely without re-clearing security, and T7 to T8 is the shortest hop in that group — under ten minutes, gate-dependent, against the 15 to 20 it takes to reach Terminal B.

Terminal 7’s list is the standard LAX mix done reasonably well: Wolfgang Puck Express, B Grill by Boa Steakhouse for burgers and a steak sandwich, BLD for the all-day breakfast case, The Counter, Ashland Hill for something closer to a California menu, and Loteria Grill and Rolling Stone Bar & Grill in the food court. Klatch Coffee pours drip a cup at a time, which is either the best or the slowest thing about it depending on how much time you have.

Shops in T7 run to Book Soup — the Sunset Boulevard bookstore, and a genuinely good airport bookshop — plus Hugo Boss, DFS Duty Free, Hudson News and, for reasons known only to LAX, Bartel’s Harley Davidson.

When not to walk

Two situations where you should stay put.

If your T8 gate is at the far end and boarding is inside forty minutes, the walk plus a food court queue is tighter than it feels while you’re reading this. Regional gates at LAX have a habit of boarding early.

And if you’re flying out before 6 AM, half of Terminal 7 isn’t open yet. Klatch starts at 5, BLD at 5, the T7 Coffee Bean at 4 — but the sit-down places don’t. At that hour Carl’s Jr in your own terminal is the honest answer, and I’d rather admit that than send you on a hike to a row of shuttered gates.

The timing that makes all of this moot

None of this matters if you’re still landside at boarding time. LAX’s checkpoint peaks at 25 minutes, on Sundays at 9 AM, and the airport logs only 10 quiet hourly slots across the whole week in our LAX TSA wait-time data — for an airport this size, that’s not much slack.

Twenty-five minutes isn’t a disaster. The problem at LAX has never really been the checkpoint clock; it’s the road in, the terminal-level traffic, and the distance between where a rideshare drops you and where your gate is. Budget two hours for a domestic departure and the T7 detour is free time. Budget ninety minutes and you’ll be eating a Carl’s Jr breakfast sandwich standing up.

The wider picture

LAX lists 97 restaurants and 86 shops across nine terminals in our data. Terminal 8 holds four of those restaurants — about 4% of the airport’s food in a terminal that handles a real share of its regional flying. Terminal B alone has 20 restaurants and 26 shops. Terminal 1 has 13. The distribution is not even, and it’s not related to how many passengers walk through.

So the general rule at LAX: check what’s in your terminal before you plan a meal around it, and check what’s next door before you settle. The LAX terminal layout is the map that decides whether that’s a short walk or a shuttle ride and a second trip through screening.

Last thought on Engine Co. No. 28, since it deserves better than being the answer to “what’s in T8.” The bar is a decent place to sit out a delay — actual glassware, a full pour, and a room that doesn’t feel like a gate area. On an evening when the departure board is turning red, that’s worth more than a marginally better burger four minutes away.
