LAX Terminal 1 has 13 places to eat, and about four of them are worth going out of your way for. That’s a better ratio than most of the airport, which is a low bar but a real one.

This is Southwest’s terminal, which means the crowd skews toward people who checked in on their phone forty minutes ago and are moving fast. The food operators here have adapted to that — the good stuff is fast, and the slow stuff is genuinely slow.

What’s the best food in LAX Terminal 1?

Urth Caffé & Bar. No real competition. It’s the airport outpost of a Los Angeles coffeehouse chain that’s been around since the 1990s, and it’s the only thing in T1 that reads as a restaurant rather than an airport concession. Order the food, not just the coffee.

Rock & Brews takes second. It’s a rock-themed bar and grill and the burger holds up. Reasonable seating, screens for whatever game is on, and a kitchen that isn’t slammed at the same times the checkpoint is.

Ace Cerveceria & Tacos is the sleeper. Fast counter service, decent tacos, and a much shorter line than the two chains that flank it.

California Pizza Kitchen is exactly what you expect. Fine. Predictable. Slower than it needs to be at peak.

Everything else is a function, not a destination: Chick-fil-A and Panda Express for speed, Betcha Burgers and Einstein Bros for filling a gap, Coffee Bean for caffeine, Qwench Juice Bar x Wetzel’s for the pretzel-and-smoothie combination that somehow always sounds good at 6 AM, and Treat Me Sweet for dessert. Be Relax is a spa, not food, but it shows up on the terminal directory and people ask.

What should I get based on how much time I have?

Under 15 minutes. Chick-fil-A or Panda Express. Both are high-throughput operations that move a line faster than anything else in the terminal. Take it to the gate.

15 to 30 minutes. Ace Cerveceria & Tacos. The line is shorter than the chains and the food is better. This is the pick most people miss.

30 to 60 minutes. Urth Caffé & Bar, sitting down. This is the window where T1’s best option actually becomes available to you, and it’s worth using.

Over an hour, or a delay. Reilly’s Irish Pub if you want quiet, Rock & Brews if you want food with your drink. Reilly’s is noticeably calmer, which matters if you’re trying to work.

Long layover, three hours plus. Walk to the Bradley terminal. Terminals 1, 2 and 3 connect airside to Bradley, and Bradley has 20 restaurants — Border Grill, P.F. Chang’s, Beecher’s, Umami Burger, CHAYA Sushi, LAMILL Coffee. It’s a genuinely better food floor than anything on the domestic side. Give yourself 15 to 20 minutes each way and check your gate before you commit.

How does Terminal 1 compare to the rest of LAX?

LAX has 97 restaurants spread across nine terminal entries, and the distribution is wildly uneven.

The Bradley terminal leads with 20. Terminal 6 has 12, including the Wolfgang Puck cluster — The Kitchen, The Wine Bar, and WPizza at Gate 63. Terminal 1’s 13 puts it in the upper middle. Terminal 7 has 10 including B Grill by Boa Steakhouse and Ashland Hill, and Terminal 3 has 10. Terminal 5 closed in October 2025 and its ten are gone.

At the bottom, Terminal 4 has three. Three. Sammy’s Woodfired, a Homeboy Cafe, and a Dunkin’ at Gate 45. Terminal 8 has four.

So if you’re flying Southwest out of T1, you’re doing better than a lot of the airport. You’re not doing as well as anyone in Bradley.

The full LAX restaurant directory lists all 97 by terminal if your gate moves, and the LAX terminal guide covers how the connections work.

Do I have time to eat at LAX?

This is the part that decides everything, and LAX has an unusual profile.

The airport’s TSA peak is only 25 minutes, on Sunday at 9 AM. Sunday 11 AM runs 24 and Sunday 5 PM runs 23. Friday at 9 AM hits 23. Monday at 10 PM hits 23. By big-airport standards those are modest numbers.

The catch is the floor. LAX logs just 10 hourly slots at five minutes or under across the entire week. Ten. That means the checkpoint essentially never empties — you’re looking at a 12-to-25-minute wait at almost any hour you show up.

Practically, that means you can’t plan a food stop on the assumption of a fast checkpoint. Assume 20 minutes at security, always, and build the meal on top of that rather than into the gap. The LAX TSA wait times page has the hourly detail if you want to check your specific departure.

Is Terminal 1 shopping worth anything?

Eight shops, and it’s a reasonable mix. SOL Surf, Kiehl’s, MAC Cosmetics, Hudson, New Stand and a New Stand kiosk, I Love L.A., and Brookstone.

That’s better than it sounds for a domestic terminal. Kiehl’s and MAC mean you can actually fix a forgotten toiletry situation rather than buying whatever the newsstand has. The LAX shops directory covers all 86 across the airport if you’re looking for something specific — the Bradley terminal carries the luxury names, with Cartier, Bvlgari and Hermès all in the DFS boutique cluster.

What to do with a Southwest departure out of LAX

Get through security first, always. LAX’s floor doesn’t drop and the walk from checkpoint to gate in T1 is short, so clearing the line early costs you nothing and removes the only real variable.

Then check the clock. Over 40 minutes to boarding, go to Urth Caffé and sit down. Under 40, Ace Cerveceria. Under 15, Chick-fil-A and keep walking.

And if you’re on a long connection, the Bradley walk is one of the better food decisions available anywhere at LAX. Just look at the departure board before you go, because gate changes at this airport are frequent enough to strand you on the wrong side of a 20-minute walk.

If you’re arriving rather than departing, the LAX arrival guide covers the ground transport situation, which is its own separate problem.
